Vitalik Buterin Reveals Ethereum Strategy Centered on Layer 1s, Data Blobs, and User Experience
The Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation, Aya Miyaguchi, along with co-founder Vitalik Buterin, has outlined a comprehensive vision for the organization that centers on decentralization, promoting community involvement, and maintaining technological robustness.
In a collaborative blog entry from April 28, they emphasized an intensified focus on Layer 1 solutions, Blobs, and enhancing the user experience to better serve Ethereum’s global user base.
Ethereum’s Future Objectives
Miyaguchi and Buterin stated that the primary objectives of the Ethereum Foundation are to ensure that users fully benefit from the characteristics of ETH while fostering a resilient and decentralized ecosystem that effectively mitigates vulnerabilities.
With this in mind, the foundation aims to enhance meaningful use of ETH across diverse sectors such as decentralized finance, social media, and platforms coordinating artificial intelligence. A fundamental goal is to strengthen the resilience of both the technical and social aspects of the blockchain through decentralization, effective risk management, and a variety of development teams.
Among the key focuses for the upcoming year are the scaling of the Ethereum mainnet, the progress of Blob technology, and improvements to the user experience throughout the network. The foundation also aims to enhance interoperability between Layer 1 and Layer 2, refine the application layer, and increase visibility for developers and applications during events like Devcon.
Blobs, which were introduced in the Dencun upgrade via EIP-4844 (Proto-Danksharding), provide a cost-effective solution for Layer 2 rollups to transmit data to the Ethereum mainnet, effectively tackling persistent challenges of high fees and network congestion.
The foundation is also concentrating on uplifting user and developer interactions. For users, this entails enhancing wallet functionalities, clarifying gas fees, and ensuring smooth connectivity across Layer 2 networks. For developers, Ethereum is committed to simplifying the development process with improved tools, comprehensive documentation, grants, and educational resources.
Organizational Restructuring
Concurrently, the organization announced changes to its leadership structure aimed at improving strategic implementation, fortifying internal operations, and bolstering network support during its growth trajectory.
In March, the EF appointed Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz K. Stańczak as co-executive directors, a move designed to balance both operational and technical skills.
The duo will collaborate closely with the wider management team, focusing on strategic initiatives, ecosystem cultivation, and day-to-day operations. They are supported by Bastian Aue and Josh Stark, who will focus on enhancing areas such as organizational strategy, recruitment, project oversight, and public relations.
In a joint declaration, Wang and Stańczak pledged their dedication to four core principles: censorship resistance, open-source development, privacy, and security. For his two-year tenure, Stańczak will prioritize the acceleration of technical infrastructure development, while Wang will act as a strategic link between the board and operational tasks.
