Paraguayan authorities prevent cryptocurrency mining theft and deport apprehended suspects.
Authorities in Paraguay executed the deportation of three individuals and apprehended another linked to a robbery attempt that occurred on May 15 at a cryptocurrency mining facility in Coronel Bogado, a locality in Paraguay.
During a May 15 interview on a local news channel, prosecutor Irene Rolón revealed that the suspects were alleged to have targeted the computer servers designated for cryptocurrency mining and unlawfully entered a restricted area of the site.
The incident came to light when local law enforcement received a tip regarding a secure room at the mining operation. Upon entry, they found four individuals from China inside.
Rolón noted that the suspects did not communicate in Spanish, but authorities were able to ascertain through digital tools and available documents that they were originally from mainland China.
When investigators inspected the suspects’ passports, it was revealed that three had entered Paraguay without the requisite legal permissions.
Paraguayan officials contacted Interpol agents who confirmed that there were no records of lawful entry for the individuals. Reports indicated that they had crossed into Paraguay via Bolivia and Brazil.
### Motive and Criminal Investigation
The authorities conjecture that this robbery attempt aligns with a larger strategy by a group known for consistently targeting high-value electronic equipment.
One of the detained individuals was initially in critical condition and later moved to a general ward; however, no details were disclosed regarding his medical state.
Law enforcement has yet to conduct a comprehensive interview with him to clarify the group’s specific intentions. Preliminary assessments suggest the goal was the theft of servers and other computing equipment.
Investigators are actively seeking to identify and apprehend additional persons connected to the attempted theft. Rolón mentioned that they have some initial information that could aid in locating other suspects.
The investigation continues to remain ongoing, with the Public Ministry collaborating with Interpol and immigration authorities on the matter.
### Unauthorized Labor and Administrative Action
The four suspects claimed to have been employed as programmers for the company managing the mining operation. However, their employment situation is still under scrutiny, given the lack of proper documentation.
Rolón also reported that the employer has not yet provided any proof of the employment relationship. The owner of the company has assured that the necessary documentation would be submitted by May 16.
The prosecutor emphasized that the process to expel the undocumented individuals commenced promptly following their arrest.
The results of ongoing interviews and document reviews will play a crucial role in determining the legal employment status of the Chinese nationals and any additional charges related to the attempted robbery.
